Coseley Baths Closure

September 1, 2009

MPs Pat McFadden and Ian AustonI have been involved with the campaign to stop the closure of Coseley Baths for some months now, speaking at public meetings, writing to Dudley Council and working closely with the Coseley councillors and the local residents. This week, together with many local residents, Ian Austin MP and I protested outside the baths on what the council have said is it’s final day of being open.

It was a sad day for the area. People want the baths kept open. It is a valuable and important local facility for the area and, at a time when we want people to take more exercise it is tragic that the council have taken this decision. Local people feel the council is turning its back on Coseley. They have tried to say the pool is not needed because there is to be a new one in Bilston but I don’t believe that argument holds any water. There have been pools in Bilston and Coseley for years without a problem. Why should it be a problem now? I fully support the new pool at Bilston. It is much needed and will be a great new facility for people. But that is not an argument for closing Coseley baths.
